Thorpe Village, Norwich Postcard

Thorpe Village Postcard

For sale on ebay: "A fine, clean, original, unused postcard of Parker Post Office & Stores Thorpe Saint Andrew, Norwich, Norfolk - also known as Thorpe Village.

Some history from the book Old Norfolk Post Offices by Roger A. Davie...

Thorpe St. Andrew (also Thorpe next Norwich or Thorpe Village) is a parish and picturesque village on the road to Yarmouth and on the north bank of the river Yare. It is two miles east from Norwich, with a station called 'Whitlingham Junction' on the Great Eastern railway, at which point the Yarmouth and Lowestoft branches join the Cromer line. Within Blofield hundred, the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 2,424, including 76 officials and their families and 841 inmates of the County Lunatic Asylum.

Walter James Parker was sub-postmaster in 1900 and 1904. He appears in the 1911 census where he describes himself as 'Grocer & Draper, Sub-Postmaster G.P.O.'.

Letters arrived by mail cart from Norwich. Letterboxes were located at Sunninghill, the cemetery wall, the asylum wall and on Plumstead Road.

The post office was the building with the shop windows and balustrade, the name above the door is Parker. Quite easy to identify, now a cafe.".
